The New York Times is reporting that Apple is not planning on releasing a smaller, cheaper version of the iPhone. Citing persons familiar with the plans of the Cupertino, Calif.-based company, the Times says that “contrary to published reports, Apple is not currently developing a smaller iPhone.”
The sources’ identities have not been disclosed by the publication because they asked not to be named
“because the plans are confidential”
, the report says.
Instead of a smaller iPhone, Apple is apparently focused on finishing the highly anticipated iPhone 5. However, the NY Times article did give some clues on Apple’s vision for the future of the iPhone, reporting that Apple is looking to reduce the cost of the device.
“Although the innards of the phone, including memory size or camera quality, could change to offer a less expensive model, the size of the device would not vary”
Another source of the publication said that Apple is not working on a smaller version of the iPhone because it would not necessarily mean that it would become less expensive by reducing its size.
Apple would not also want to reduce the size of the device’s screen because it would force developers to modify their programs, the Times said.
