Apple’s iPad 2 is already in production, a report from the Wall Street Journal says, citing sources “familiar with the matter”.

According to the WSJ, the next iteration of the market-defining tablet will also feature a front-facing camera and a more powerful processor. The next-generation iPad will be released later this year.

The WSJ wrote:

“The new iPad will be thinner and lighter than the first model, these people said. It will have at least one camera on the front of the device for features like video-conferencing, but the resolution of the display will be similar to the first iPad, these people said. It will also have more memory and a more powerful graphics processor, they said.”

To date, Apple is yet to confirm that it is working on an heir to the first-generation iPad. However, earlier leaks made by various media outlets point to the iPad 2’s parts already being manufactured and shipped.
Some rumors are that this is also expected the iPad 2 could get a carbon fiber body. Although no officially words are spoken by Apple.
According to the WSJ report, the iPad 2 will be initially released in the US on “Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc., but not Sprint Nextel Corp. or T-Mobile.”
